VA disability pay with dependents
Veterans with a combined rating of at least 30% may qualify for additional compensation for an eligible spouse, child, or dependent parent.
Who may qualify
VA’s dependent categories include a spouse, certain children, and parents who meet financial-dependency rules. Children may qualify when they are under 18, between 18 and 23 and attending an approved school, or permanently unable to support themselves because of a disability that began before age 18.
A parent’s eligibility depends on more than age or living arrangement. VA considers income and net worth. Use the official application instructions to establish eligibility rather than simply selecting a parent in a calculator.
How to enter your household
Choose your spouse status, the number of qualifying children under 18, and qualifying students ages 18–23. Each child belongs in one category. Select only dependent parents VA recognizes or is considering in your hypothetical scenario.
A spouse who qualifies for Aid and Attendance may add another amount. The calculator includes that addition, but does not determine eligibility. For an adult child permanently incapable of self-support, ask VA or an accredited representative how the award should be calculated.
Adding or removing a dependent
Use VA’s online dependency process or the applicable VA forms. Be prepared to provide identifying information, relationship details, and supporting documents when requested. A school-age child may require school-attendance information.
Report changes such as divorce, a dependent’s death, or a child leaving a qualifying school program promptly. Continuing to receive an addition after eligibility ends can create an overpayment.
Estimate versus approved payment
Changing a field here does not update your VA records or submit an application. Your approved award and effective date control your payment. If a new dependent is missing from your award, check the claim status with VA instead of assuming the calculator amount will arrive automatically.
