TDIU versus a 100% VA disability rating
Individual Unemployability may allow an eligible veteran to receive compensation at the 100% rate even when the combined schedular rating is lower.
What TDIU addresses
TDIU concerns a veteran’s inability to maintain substantially gainful employment because of service-connected disabilities. It is not determined by the calculator, a diagnosis alone, or the fact that someone is currently unemployed.
VA considers the impact of service-connected conditions and the evidence about employment. A combined rating and the rate at which compensation is paid can therefore be different numbers.
The usual percentage thresholds
The usual schedular thresholds are one service-connected disability rated at least 60%, or multiple disabilities with at least one rated 40% and a combined rating of at least 70%. Special grouping rules can affect the “one disability” requirement. Cases outside these thresholds may require extraschedular consideration.
Meeting the percentages does not by itself establish entitlement. The employment-related requirement still matters.
TDIU, 100%, and permanent and total
A 100% schedular rating, TDIU, and a permanent-and-total determination are distinct concepts. A high combined rating does not automatically mean VA has found the disability permanent. Some additional family benefits depend on the actual permanent-and-total determination.
Use the language in your VA decision and benefit letters, rather than inferring status from a monthly payment amount.
Working and applying
Employment questions under TDIU can involve income, marginal employment, and the facts of the work setting. Get individualized guidance before relying on a general online answer. VA’s application process includes employment information and may use VA Form 21-8940 and employer information.
This calculator shows standard schedular compensation. It does not assess TDIU eligibility, work limits, or an existing TDIU award.
